New hair loss treatment alternatives are being discovered at an increasing rate. Most of these alternative treatments carry a much lower cost than the current options, and, that’s something we can all appreciate. Preventing hair loss would be the best option, but, for most of us, that realization comes too late.
Assuming you suffer no medical problems, your hair loss is likely caused by DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone begins life as testosterone (the male sex hormone), but is transformed into DHT by the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. DHT kills hair follicles by blocking their blood supply, starving them.
For many years anyone wanting to stop hair loss had few options other than expensive medical treatments. And, many times, the results were far from satisfactory. It seems that the world is never short of those looking to profit from the pain of others.
When the use of hair transplants became an option, positive results became more certain. Even so, the total cost of treatments could easily surpass $20,000.00. The high price, general discomfort involved, and the length of time necessary for these procedures made finding alternatives more and more attractive.
Currently, the only FDA approved alternative treatment is Minoxidil (aka: Rogain), which is now available in a number of over-the-counter products> Of course, many of the “original” hair loss treatments are still being touted, but, beware spending your money on anything that has not been independently proven to work. Other options may prove to be very effective, but you should do your homework before spending your money.
