Electric fencing
Electric fencing is needed in South Africa to protect residents against criminals. That is normally the first barrier to protect a property. The electric fence is a physical deterrent, provides an electrical shock, has a built in alarm and the alarm can be connected with the armed response. Nearly all private houses in high income areas have electric fencing. We live in a country with a climate suitable for outdoor living almost all year. We want to enjoy our beautiful gardens and outside entertainment areas. Everyday there are news reports of people murdered or injured during attacks by lawless criminals. You do not want to be another statistic. We have to realize that we are responsible for our own safety.
Wall top electric fences are installed to prevent intruders to climb over walls and palisade fences. In the past we installed five line electric fences. Nowadays even six lines are not high enough. Because of the higher poles it is necessary to install square tubing poles to provide better stability. The fences must be high enough to prevent a person to step over the fence. Remember that trees standing next to electric fences might enable intruders to get over the fence after a few years. Poles must not be spaces at centers exceeding three meters.
Free standing fences are used where no physical barriers exists. It is a stand alone electrified fence. High sturdy poles are planted in the ground. Steel wire strands are spaced hundred millimeters apart, in some cases with fifty millimeter intervals. To prevent wires shorting out insulators are used to secure wire to the poles. The looping wires are installed to ensure that the fence is connected in series. Normally every second wire is earthed. If a person touches the earth as well as the live wire the shock is more intense.
To provide more protection to an existing electric fence, it can be used as a basis to secure a free standing fence to. Attached fences are used to protect the bottom as well as the top section of the fence. This is very popular in industrial areas where valuable articles are stored. Palisade fences are broken and wire fences are cut open to get access to properties. Attached fences are a popular method to protect concrete walls as well.
Electric fences are used to protect the perimeter walls op estates and complexes. Specialized energizers are available to provide a higher level of security. It is always a good idea to have a dedicated energizer per zone. If there is a problem, the guards know to pay special attention to that particular area.
Zones are created in large electric fences to enable the guards or owners to pinpoint a specific place of intrusion. Every energizer manufacturer has a unique way of creating zones in an electric fence. Some manufacturers design dual zone energizers. Multi zone energizers can also indicate problem areas. One must take into account that sophisticated systems are more expensive to maintain. Energizers can be connected to computers to enable the maintenance team as well as the relevant staff informed of the status the electric fence. A mimic panel can be installed in the guard house to indicate the point of intrusion.
Energizers are used to provide the electric fence with power. Standards are set by law to ensure that all energizers are non lethal. The maximum limit is 9900 volts. Energizers can produce from four to eight joules. Some energizers are adjustable to enable the installer to make provision for longer or shorter fences. The electricity consumption of energizers are minimal. All energizers are equipped with battery backup. The time ranges from four hours to ten hours depending on the capacity of the battery. Energizers must be installed in the house in order to enable residents to switch the power off in case of an alarm. Slave panels are also available to be installed in side houses.
Gates are the most important part of an electrified fence. It can be lifted off the rack and pushed open. I is important to install anti lift devices. Gate contacts are installed to electrify gates when in a closed position. The wires are connected in series and are part of the fence. The gate itself is not electrified and can be touched. The fence should be attached to the gate and moves with the gate to enable high vehicles to enter the premises.
