If you are at the stage of buying some pet guinea pigs (Maybe after watching G-force) then the most important thing to remember is the larger the cage, the happier they will be.
And there is more chance a happy guinea pig will most likely be a healthy guinea pig.
Before you go out and buy a cage, you’ll have to work out where you will keep the guinea pig hutch. Preferably, you want your pet cavies to be part of the family and what better way than to have them in your living area.
Guinea pigs don’t like being alone and the more human interaction they have the easier they will be to pick up and cuddle.
A good guide to go by when choosing a house is to work by square feet. Around 8 square feet or a 2.5 x 3 foot sized cage is recommended minimum.
Guinea pigs need space to run around and the more space the better. They love doing laps around the cage and avoiding their own waste is important for quality of life.
In the past, experts of guinea pigs advised that they did not need much room for running around and people bought small cages of only 2 to 4 square feet.
When they haven’t much room, the lack of exercise leads to problems such as constipation, cysts, heart disease and respiratory infection.
Just remember a large guinea pig cage is essential to happy, healthy and furry little friend that will keep you company for up to 10 years.
